Our Services

Zebrah offers different types of editing and the type you’ll need depends on your project. Editing is charged at differing rates per 100 words and all services are fully customisable. The time frames of all editing services vary and depend on your project and your needs. The time frame for a project will be included in an accepted quote.

Academic editing:

This type of editing is best for research papers, dissertations, theses, journal articles and academic papers. Academic editing includes a thorough edit of grammar and punctuation, sentence structure and diction. We do not edit your argument, research, logic or detailed structure, so you don’t have to worry about plagiarism via your editor. Zebrah also edits general structure and format, including references and tables. You can also opt to exclude referencing or formatting, or choose to use our proofreading options, creating the service you need.

Our areas of expertise are mainly in the humanities, law, engineering and digital humanities, and we cover a wide variety of texts.

Discounts apply for students with proof of registration and we feature early submissions specials at points of the year. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for updates on current specials.

Professional editing:

Similar to academic editing, this option includes a thorough and detailed edit of professional texts. These often include textbooks, book chapters, study guides and programs.

Fictional novels:

Editing a novel happens in different stages and at different points in the writing process. The four types of editing Zebrah offers for novels are development editing, line editing, copy editing and proofreading.

Developmental or structural editing is for the early stages of your novel and is used to work on your overall story. It includes working on plot, characters, structure, narrative style, pace and tone. This type of editing can also be used to check your text for sensitivity reads (such as the representation of marginalised voices). How our team will edit your novel depends on your needs and we will work together to cater to you individually. Developmental editing does not include editing grammar, punctuation or language editing.

Line editing is a closer edit of the sentence by sentence structure of your writing. Your editor will look at style and flow, and advise on the areas that could be improved on. Line editing also includes looking at how the writing itself portrays the decisions of plot, narrative and characterisation made in developmental editing. Your editor will also look at dialogue and tense, ensuring your text flows and conveys the tone you’d like. Line editing can be a full edit of the entire manuscript, or an edit of a chosen section that can be carried through to the rest of the text by the author.

Copy editing is an integral step to perfecting your novel. This type of editing includes grammar, punctuation, syntax, diction, style and logic. It also includes checking spacing and formatting, and chapter sequencing. It is a detailed readthrough and direct edit of the entire work.

Proofreading is the final step and is the quality control step. Proofreading includes approving formatting and looking for typography errors, typos, consistency errors and layout errors, and occasionally last minute copy changes that could have slipped through. This is the very final check of a novel, and should not be the only type of edit a manuscript receives. It is the crucial final step to delivering a polished novel.

Zebrah offers these different types of novel editing as individual options, or as bundles for the duration of a project. We can design the best approach to your needs.

Corporate copy editing:

This type of editing is best for contracts, policies, memorandums, reports, manuals, guides and other corporate documents. These services include grammar and language editing, punctuation, sentence structure, tone, diction and format. Add ons to corporate editing can include fact checking where appropriate, and referencing.

Media copy editing:

This type of editing is mainly for newspapers, news sites, magazines and social media profiles. Media copy editing includes grammar, punctuation, style, structure, tone and source integration. Social media copy can also include editing graphics and posts, story posts and captions.

Editing retainer:

This option is best for long term services and clients who require ongoing editing. The retainer is charged monthly at a fee worked out to individual needs. With an editing retainer, Zebrah reserves project space for your work, whenever you need it edited. To discuss how an editing retainer could work for you, reach out to us!
